Vardzia
Vardzia is a cave monastery cut into the cliffs of Erusheti mountain above the Mtkvari river in southern Georgia. Begun under George III and largely built under Queen Tamar in the 1180s, it had hundreds of rooms, a church with royal frescoes and an irrigation system. An earthquake in 1283 destroyed much of it and exposed the inner caves.
