Satrae

5th century BCE · 5th century BCE

The Satrae were a Thracian people of the mountains of the northern Aegean hinterland, described by Herodotus in the 5th century BCE as the only Thracians never to have been subjected. They held an oracle of Dionysus on a high mountain, where members of the Bessi served as prophets. They are not clearly attested in later sources.
