Schieringers

14th–15th century · 14th century

The Schieringers were one of two rival factions in late medieval Frisia, opposed to the Vetkopers, in feuds that lasted from the 14th to the end of the 15th century. Rooted in rivalries between chieftain families, monasteries and towns, the conflict weakened the Frisian Freedom. In 1498 the Schieringers sided with Duke Albert of Saxony, whose intervention ended Frisian self-government west of the Ems.
