Vetkopers

14th–15th century · 14th century

The Vetkopers were one of two rival factions in late medieval Frisia, opposed to the Schieringers. Their feud, which began in the 14th century and was linked to rivalries between chieftain families, monasteries and towns, divided Westergo, Oostergo and neighbouring lands, with the Vetkopers generally allied to the city of Groningen. The conflict weakened Frisia until Albert of Saxony took control in 1498.
