Sea Beggars

Also known as Watergeuzen

The Sea Beggars (Watergeuzen) were Dutch Protestant privateers who fought Spanish rule in the Low Countries from 1568, sailing under letters of marque from William of Orange. Expelled from English ports, they captured Brielle on 1 April 1572 and then Flushing, setting off revolts across Holland and Zeeland that made the two provinces the core of the Dutch Revolt.
