Senussi order

Also known as Sanusiyya

The Senussi order (Sanusiyya) was a Sufi religious and political brotherhood founded in the nineteenth century and centred in Cyrenaica in Libya. It organised resistance to French and Italian colonial expansion in the Sahara. Accounts of the Darfur Sultanate note that Sanusi influence and Pan-Islamic propaganda shaped Ali Dinar's decision to side with the Ottomans in the First World War.
