Senusret III

r. c. 1878–1839 BCE · 19th century BCE · Also known as Sesostris III

Senusret III was a pharaoh of the Twelfth Dynasty of Middle Kingdom Egypt, reigning in the 19th century BCE. He curbed the power of the provincial nomarchs and campaigned repeatedly in Nubia, strengthening the fortresses around the Second Cataract such as Semna. A stela of his official Khu-Sebek records a campaign into the Levant reaching Sekmem, usually identified with Shechem.
