Sermon on Law and Grace

c. 1037–1050 · 11th century

The Sermon on Law and Grace is a work by Hilarion, later metropolitan of Kiev, composed between about 1037 and 1050. Contrasting the Law of the Old Testament with the grace of the New, it celebrates the conversion of Rus' and praises Vladimir the Great and Yaroslav the Wise, placing the Rus' among the Christian nations. It is regarded as the first masterpiece of East Slavic literature.
