Servatius

d. 384 · 4th century · Also known as Saint Servatius

Servatius was a 4th-century bishop of the Tungri, with his see at Tongeren in present-day Belgium. He took part in church councils, including that of Serdica in 343, and opposed the Arian doctrine. According to tradition he died at Maastricht in 384, where his tomb became the centre of a major pilgrimage, and the see moved there and later to Liège. He is venerated as a saint, especially in the Low Countries.
