Vindolanda
Vindolanda was a Roman auxiliary fort in northern England, just south of Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. Built around 85 CE, before the wall, it was garrisoned by auxiliary units of Tungrians and Batavians. Excavations directed by Robin Birley from 1973 recovered the Vindolanda tablets, thin wooden writing tablets of around 100 CE that preserve letters, lists and accounts and give a rare picture of daily life on the frontier.
