Sesshū Tōyō

1420–1506 · 15th century · Also known as Sesshū

Sesshū Tōyō was a Japanese Zen monk and painter, the foremost master of ink painting of the Muromachi period. Trained at Shōkoku-ji in Kyoto, he travelled to Ming China in 1467–1469 and later worked under the patronage of the Ōuchi clan at Yamaguchi. His landscapes, such as the long handscroll of the four seasons, fused Chinese models with a bold personal style.
