Severan dynasty

193–235 · 2nd century

The Severan dynasty ruled the Roman Empire from 193 to 235. It was founded by Septimius Severus, a native of Leptis Magna in Africa, who won the civil wars after 193, and continued under his sons Caracalla and Geta and then Elagabalus and Severus Alexander, relatives of his wife Julia Domna. The murder of Severus Alexander in 235 opened the Crisis of the Third Century.
