Sharpeville massacre
The Sharpeville massacre took place on 21 March 1960 in the township of Sharpeville, south of Johannesburg, when police fired on a crowd protesting against the pass laws in a campaign led by the Pan Africanist Congress, killing 69 people. The government declared a state of emergency and banned the ANC and the PAC, which then turned to armed struggle. The day is now Human Rights Day in South Africa.
