Shimonoseki
Shimonoseki is a city at the south-western tip of Honshu, Japan, on the Kanmon Strait facing Kyushu. Off its shore the Battle of Dan-no-ura ended the Genpei War in 1185. In 1863–64 the Chōshū domain fired on foreign ships from its batteries there, provoking Western naval bombardments, and in 1895 the Treaty of Shimonoseki ended the First Sino-Japanese War.
