Shinran

1173–1263 · 13th century

Shinran was a Japanese Buddhist monk, a disciple of Hōnen and founder of the Jōdo Shinshū, or True Pure Land school. Exiled in 1207, he married and lived among ordinary people, teaching that salvation depended entirely on faith in the Buddha Amida. His school later became the largest in Japan and the basis of the Ikko-ikki leagues.
