Siege engine
A siege engine is a device designed to break or bypass fortifications, such as a battering ram, siege tower, catapult or trebuchet. The Mongol Empire used engineers from China and the Islamic world to build and operate siege engines. This allowed Mongol armies, described in the Mongol Empire profile, to capture fortified cities.
