Siege of Akhulgo

1839 · 19th century · Part of the Caucasian War

The siege of Akhulgo was a Russian siege of Imam Shamil's mountain fortress in Dagestan in the summer of 1839. A Russian force under General Pavel Grabbe stormed the fortress in August after some eighty days, at a heavy cost on both sides, and most of the defenders and their families died. Shamil escaped and rebuilt his imamate.
