Caucasian War

1817–1864 · 19th century

The Caucasian War was the Russian Empire's long conquest of the North Caucasus, from 1817 to 1864. Russia faced fierce resistance from the peoples of Chechnya and Dagestan, united under Imam Shamil until his surrender in 1859, and from the Circassians in the north-west, whose defeat in 1864 was followed by the mass expulsion of Circassians to the Ottoman Empire.
