Siege of Isfahan

1722 · 18th century

The Siege of Isfahan was the siege of the Safavid capital by Afghan forces under Mahmud Hotaki in 1722. After months of famine, Shah Sultan Husayn surrendered and abdicated. Accounts of the Safavid Empire treat the fall of Isfahan as the effective end of the Safavid state.
