South African Party

1911–1934 · 20th century

The South African Party was a political party founded in 1911 by Louis Botha and Jan Smuts, whose leaders governed the Union of South Africa from 1910 to 1924. It sought reconciliation between Afrikaners and English-speaking South Africans within the British Empire and absorbed the Unionist Party in 1920. In 1934 it merged with Hertzog's National Party to form the United Party.
