Soweto uprising
The Soweto uprising began on 16 June 1976, when thousands of Black schoolchildren in Soweto, near Johannesburg, marched against the compulsory use of Afrikaans as a language of instruction. Police opened fire, killing Hector Pieterson among others, and protests spread across South Africa, leaving several hundred people dead in the following months. The uprising revived internal resistance to apartheid, and 16 June is now Youth Day.
