Spearthrower Owl

d. 439 · 5th century · Also known as Jatz'om Kuy

Spearthrower Owl is the name given by scholars to a powerful lord named in Maya inscriptions as the father of Yax Nuun Ayiin I, who became king of Tikal in 379 after the arrival of Siyaj K'ak'. His name glyph combines an owl and a spear-thrower, emblems associated with Teotihuacan, and many scholars think he was a ruler of Teotihuacan itself. The inscriptions record his death in 439.
