Stafford Bettesworth Haines

1802–1860 · 19th century

Stafford Bettesworth Haines was a British naval officer who captured Aden for the East India Company in January 1839, after a dispute with the Sultan of Lahej over a plundered ship. He then governed it as political agent for fifteen years and built up the port, which had shrunk to a village. Dismissed in 1854 over a deficit in his accounts, he spent six years in prison in Bombay.
