State of Vietnam

1949–1955 · 20th century

The State of Vietnam was the French-backed government of Vietnam headed by the former emperor Bảo Đại, created by the Élysée Accords of 1949 as an alternative to Ho Chi Minh's Viet Minh. Highland territories such as the Tai Federation were nominally attached to it. After the Geneva Accords of 1954 it held the south, and in 1955 Ngô Đình Diệm deposed Bảo Đại and proclaimed the Republic of Vietnam.
