State of the Presidi

1557–1801 · 16th century · Also known as Stato dei Presidi

The State of the Presidi was a group of fortified coastal places in southern Tuscany, including Orbetello, Porto Ercole, Porto Santo Stefano and Talamone, kept by Spain when it granted Siena to Cosimo I de' Medici in 1557. Garrisoned to guard the sea route between Spain's Italian possessions, it passed to Austria and then to the Kingdom of Naples, and was annexed to the French-backed Kingdom of Etruria in 1801.
