Steinhuder Meer
The Steinhuder Meer is the largest lake in north-western Germany, about 30 square kilometres in area but only a few metres deep, lying north-west of Hanover in Lower Saxony. Count William of Schaumburg-Lippe built the artificial island fortress of Wilhelmstein in it in the 1760s. Today it is a nature reserve and a centre for sailing and tourism.
