Wilhelmstein

1761–1765 · 18th century

Wilhelmstein is an artificial island fortress in the Steinhuder Meer in Lower Saxony, Germany, built between 1761 and 1765 by Count William of Schaumburg-Lippe. Designed to defend his small state, it also housed his military school, where the young Gerhard von Scharnhorst was trained. It withstood a siege by Hessian troops in 1787 and is now a museum.
