Sutherland
Sutherland is a historic county in the far north of Scotland, now part of the Highland council area, a thinly peopled land of moors, mountains and lochs. Its Gaelic name, Cataibh, recalls the Cait of Pictish times, while the English name comes from the Norse 'southern land', as seen from Orkney and Caithness. In the early 19th century the Sutherland estates carried out some of the harshest of the Highland Clearances.
