Tanguts

Also known as Tangut people

The Tanguts were a people of north-western China, speaking a Tibeto-Burman language, who lived in the Ordos and the Gansu corridor. Under the Li clan they founded the Western Xia state, whose ruler Li Yuanhao declared himself emperor in 1038 and introduced a Tangut script in 1036. Their state was destroyed by Genghis Khan's Mongols in 1227, and thousands of Tangut texts were later recovered at Khara-Khoto.
