Amdo

Amdo is the north-eastern region of the Tibetan plateau, now mostly in the Chinese province of Qinghai with parts of Gansu and Sichuan. A frontier of grasslands and farming valleys where Tibetans, Mongols, Chinese and Muslims met, it was home to the 11th-century kingdom of Tsongkha. It is the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug school, and of the 14th Dalai Lama, and holds great monasteries such as Kumbum and Labrang.
