Xining
Xining is the capital of the Chinese province of Qinghai, on the Huangshui river at the north-eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau. In the 11th century, as Qingtang, it was the court of the Tibetan ruler Gusiluo. Under the Ming and Qing dynasties it was a garrison and trading town between the Chinese, Tibetans and Mongols, and the great Gelug monastery of Kumbum lies nearby.
