Teimuraz I of Kakheti

1589–1663 · 17th century

Teimuraz I was king of Kakheti in eastern Georgia from 1605, with interruptions, and later also of Kartli, as well as a noted poet. His long resistance to Shah Abbas I of Iran led to the devastation of Kakheti in 1614–1617, when many thousands of people were killed or deported, and to the martyrdom of his mother Ketevan. He spent his last years as a prisoner in Iran.
