Ketevan the Martyr

c. 1565–1624 · 17th century · Also known as Saint Ketevan

Ketevan, known as Saint Ketevan the Martyr, was a queen of Kakheti in eastern Georgia and the mother of King Teimuraz I. Sent to Iran as a hostage, she was held for years at Shiraz and, after refusing to give up Christianity, was tortured to death on the orders of Shah Abbas I in 1624. Augustinian missionaries took relics of her to Goa, and she is venerated by the Georgian Orthodox Church.
