Temporary Provisions against the Communist Rebellion

1948–1991 · 20th century

The Temporary Provisions against the Communist Rebellion were amendments attached to the constitution of the Republic of China in 1948, during the civil war. They gave the president emergency powers and exempted him from term limits, and on Taiwan they underpinned martial law and kept the legislators elected on the mainland in office for decades. They were abolished in 1991 under Lee Teng-hui.
