Tevfik Esenç

1904–1992 · 20th century

Tevfik Esenç was a Turkish villager of Ubykh descent who became the last fluent speaker of the Ubykh language. Born in a Ubykh community resettled in Anatolia after the Circassian expulsions of 1864, he worked from the 1950s with linguists such as Georges Dumézil and later George Hewitt, recording vocabulary, grammar and folklore. His death in 1992 marked the extinction of Ubykh as a spoken language.
