Thales of Miletus

c. 624–546 BCE · 6th century BCE · Also known as Thales

Thales of Miletus was a Greek thinker of the 6th century BCE, traditionally regarded as the first philosopher and the first of the Seven Sages. He held that water was the origin of all things, seeking natural rather than mythological explanations of the world. Later writers credited him with predicting a solar eclipse in 585 BCE, with geometrical discoveries and with proposing a united Ionian state centred on Teos.
