Theodoric the Great

454–526 · 6th century

Theodoric the Great was king of the Ostrogoths who invaded Italy at the request of Emperor Zeno, defeated Odoacer and ruled the peninsula from Ravenna from 493 to 526. He kept Roman law, the senate and the civil administration while his Goths formed the army, and built a network of marriage alliances with the Franks, Visigoths, Vandals, Burgundians and Thuringians. His mausoleum still stands in Ravenna.
