Third Fitna

744–747 · 8th century

The Third Fitna was a series of civil wars in the Umayyad Caliphate that began in 744 with the overthrow and killing of al-Walid II by his cousin Yazid III. Successive caliphs fell or died within months, revolts broke out across Syria, Iraq and the east, and Marwan II restored order by force by about 747, but the struggle exhausted the Syrian armies and opened the way for the Abbasid Revolution of 750.
