Third Rome
The Third Rome is the idea that Moscow succeeded Rome and Constantinople as the centre of true Christianity and the last Christian empire. It was formulated in the early sixteenth century in letters of the monk Philotheus of Pskov, against the background of the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and Ivan III's marriage to the Byzantine princess Sophia Palaiologina. Though first a religious warning, it was later read as a statement of Russian imperial destiny.
