Tillya Tepe

1st century BCE–1st century CE · 1st century BCE · Also known as Bactrian Gold

Tillya Tepe is an archaeological site in Jowzjan province, northern Afghanistan, where Viktor Sarianidi excavated six rich graves in 1978–1979. They held some 20,000 gold objects, the 'Bactrian Gold', mixing steppe, Greek, Iranian and Indian styles, probably belonging to nomad nobles of the Yuezhi or Saka. Hidden in Kabul during the wars, the hoard resurfaced in 2003.
