Tilokarat

1409–1487 · 15th century · Also known as Tilokaraj

Tilokarat was king of Lan Na, in what is now northern Thailand, from 1441 to 1487, and its most powerful ruler. He waged long wars against Ayutthaya, extended Lan Na's power over Nan and Phrae, and was a great patron of Theravada Buddhism. In 1477 he sponsored a council of monks at Wat Chet Yot in Chiang Mai to revise the Pali scriptures, counted in Thai tradition as the Eighth Buddhist Council.
