Tizatlan
Tizatlan was one of the four altepetl, or city-states, that formed the Nahua state of Tlaxcala in central Mexico. At the Spanish arrival in 1519 it was ruled by the elderly Xicotencatl, whose son Xicotencatl the Younger led the Tlaxcalan army against Cortés. Its archaeological site preserves a palace platform with painted altars in the style of the Mixteca-Puebla codices, beside a 16th-century open chapel.
