Tōhoku region
The Tōhoku region is the north-eastern part of Honshu, the main island of Japan, made up of the prefectures of Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata and Fukushima. Largely the old provinces of Mutsu and Dewa, it was long a frontier of the Japanese state and later the base of clans such as the Date and Uesugi. Its Pacific coast was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.
