Date Tanemune

1488–1565 · 16th century

Date Tanemune was head of the Date clan in southern Mutsu in the early 16th century and the first of his family appointed military governor of Mutsu. In 1536 he issued the Jinkaishu, one of the most detailed regional law codes of the Sengoku period. From 1542 a war with his son Harumune split the clan, and Harumune's victory in 1548 forced his retirement.
