Torghut

Also known as Torgut

The Torghut are an Oirat Mongol tribe. In the early 17th century, under Kho Orluk, many of them migrated from Dzungaria across the Kazakh steppe to the lower Volga, where they founded the Kalmyk Khanate. In 1771 most of the Volga Torghut, led by Ubashi Khan, made a disastrous trek back to Dzungaria under the Qing. Torghut communities live today in Kalmykia, Xinjiang and Mongolia.
