Trans-Caspian Railway

Also known as Central Asian Railway

The Trans-Caspian Railway was built by the Russian army from 1880, starting on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea, to supply the conquest of the Turkmen lands. Under General Mikhail Annenkov it reached Ashgabat in 1885, Merv in 1886 and Samarkand in 1888, and was extended to Tashkent in 1898. It tied Russian Central Asia to the empire and carried its cotton to Russian mills.
