Treaty of Fomena

1874 · 19th century · Part of the Third Anglo-Ashanti War

The Treaty of Fomena was the peace agreement of 1874 between the British Empire and the Ashanti Empire following the Third Anglo-Ashanti War. The Ashanti agreed to pay a large indemnity in gold, renounce claims to territories in the south and abandon practices the British opposed. Accounts of the Ashanti Empire treat it as a major stage in the empire's decline.
