Treaty of Gottorp

1768 · 18th century · Also known as Gottorp Settlement

The Treaty of Gottorp, concluded in 1768, settled Hamburg's long dispute with Denmark, whose kings as dukes of Holstein had claimed sovereignty over the city. Denmark recognised Hamburg as a free imperial city in return for financial concessions by the city. It ended the threat of Danish annexation that had hung over Hamburg since the 16th century.
