Treaty of Yazhelbitsy

1456 · 15th century

The Treaty of Yazhelbitsy was imposed on the Novgorod Republic by Vasily II of Moscow in 1456, after his army defeated the Novgorodians at Staraya Russa. Novgorod paid an indemnity, promised not to shelter the grand prince's enemies and lost the right to conduct its own foreign policy, and its acts were to bear the grand prince's seal. It was the first major step in the subordination of Novgorod to Moscow.
