Tsetse fly
The tsetse fly is a blood-feeding insect of tropical Africa that transmits trypanosomiasis, a disease fatal to horses and cattle. Its presence in forest regions limited the use of cavalry and draught animals. Tsetse-fly zones made local horse-breeding impossible south of Oyo's savannah heartland, so the empire imported horses from the north to sustain its cavalry.
